A feature-length documentary by award-winning filmmakers Jane Wells and John-Keith Wasson, “Tricked” follows pimps, johns, girls, parents and law enforcement agents, providing unprecedented access into their worlds and creating a comprehensive portrait of the American sex industry today.
Retained to promote the film’s New York City premiere, drive interest nationwide and establish the directors and the film’s subjects as thought leaders on sex trafficking in the U.S., our main challenge was changing the narrative that sex trafficking is a third-world problem that does not exist here.
After conducting research on the subject, we produced a press kit for the film and created messaging that would resonate with audiences and the media. We provided media training for the filmmakers and the film’s main subjects. We promoted the film among reporters who covered human rights issues, women’s issues and sex trafficking. We positioned and placed the filmmakers, the survivors and law enforcement officials as expert commentators in the trafficking space. We also worked with the film’s distributor to manage the submission process and strategy for reviews and festivals.
TASC generated 321 unique national and international media hits for “Tricked” that resulted in over 74 million media impressions. This coverage showcased the thought leadership of Jane Wells and John-Keith Wasson on national media outlets, moved the dial on the national conversation on sex trafficking, helped the producers build a grassroots campaign to show the film in hundreds of theaters and homes nationwide, attracted a national audience for the film, and increased ticket sales.
The film, the filmmakers and the film’s subjects were covered in such outlets as PBS NewsHour, PBS.org, CNN, MSNBC, Associated Press, ABC’s Katie, Glamour, FOX News, HuffPost Live, Ms. magazine, Cosmopolitan, Policy Mic, BBC Radio, Al Jazeera America and NBC’s The Grio. The film was reviewed in The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Hollywood Reporter, Film Journal International and Slant.
